Urban Sustainability Modelling: Foundations and Future Agenda for Cellular Automata and Agent-Based Approaches
报告简介
The pursuit of sustainable urban development demands advanced computational tools capable of simulating the complex interplay between urban spatial dynamics and human decision-making behaviors. This seminar explores the complementary roles of Cellular Automata (CA) and Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) as powerful frameworks for urban scenario planning and sustainability analysis. I will first introduce the foundational principles of CA and an integrated CA-ABM approach, illustrating through empirical studies how CA models are developed to simulate land-use change and urban spatial dynamics, while ABM captures the decision-making behaviors of individual agents such as developers, planners, and residents. Together, these approaches provide a robust platform for exploring alternative urban futures. I will then discuss contemporary challenges facing the urban modeling community, including issues of data integration, model calibration, validation, and computational scalability. Finally, I will outline a critical future research agenda requiring concerted attention. I conclude by advocating for the development of next-generation cellular automata that embed agent-based rules and leverage big data as the most promising pathway for strengthening our capacity to inform and achieve sustainable urban development.

刘艳：香港中文大学地理信息科学讲席教授、香港中文大学和声书院通识教育院长、地理信息科学与智慧城市硕士项目高级顾问、澳大利亚昆士兰大学荣誉教授，同济大学兼职教授，英国皇家地理学会会士，全球综合学科以及地理信息科学前2%高被引学者。曾任昆士兰大学环境学院教授、副院长，澳大利亚国家研究理事会专家委员会专家委员。刘艳教授的研究聚焦城市问题和空间数据科学，涵盖城市分析、地理空间建模与元胞自动机模拟、GIS及空间大数据分析，并探索这些方法在城市发展、健康与社会公平、空间综合人文社会科学研究中的应用。
